Broadwood 1834 

This beautiful piano, in full playing order, needs to find a new home where it will be played and cherished.  It is generously offered free of charge. 

'Their Majesties' - King William IV and Queen Adelaide.

It is dated 8 January 1834 on the side of the lowest key.  

The brass lever visible at the right of the picture indicates that this is an example of the superior action with back-checks.  Small extra weights have been added to the dampers, but these are easy to remove if the new owner refers the original softer damping.

This is one of the last examples of the acoustically elegant divided bridge.  The bass overspun and brass strings have their own bridge, while the steel strings benefit from the longer scaling on the main bridge to equalise the relative tension - steel is lighter and stronger than brass. Around this time, in the quest for ever-greater volume, brass stringing was abandoned in favour of an all-steel rig - as all modern pianos have today.
