Broadwood 1822

Free to Good Home

This handsome Broadwood is number 26692, made in 1821/2.  It has an excellent set of ivories and has evidently been restored at some time in the past; the interior condition appears to be good.

It is has all six legs, a full set of brasswork, and the pedal is present.  Unfortunately there is a rather common problem;  the glue joints at the right hand end have failed, and the upper structure is pulling away from the base.

However, there is a relatively simple fix for this: slacken off the strings, lay the piano on its back, lift the cloth from the inside front left corner, and drill a 12mm hole right through.  Squirt liquid Seccotine into as many gaps as are accessible, and pull together with a 12 mm bolt with large washers.  The head of the bolt can be recesssed into the member, and when the cloth is replaced it will be invisible.  Not guaranteed to work, but there's a good chance of success.

The hammers look good, and could be orignal; the damper cloths have evidently been replaced.   The screws in the hammer-rail cover are new, so presumably there has been maintenance to the hammer hinges. We note the excellent condition of the ivories  - but they do need cleaning!

For a few years around this date, the treble wrestpins were moved to the right hand end to avoid overcrowding at the back.  The all-important soundboard and bridges are well above average.  The strings need a bit of attention, but most appear to be serviceable.
