Spinet by John Bryan c. 1950s

This spinet is notable for its slightly unusual design, and beautiful woodwork.  Working in the West Country, John Bryan (1931 - 2021) was also respected for his beautiful lyres.  It was recently re-strung by Macolm Rose, and is now offered for sale as its owner is looking for a larger harpsichord.

Detail of inlay and keys - please zoom in.

The plucking-point is further from the nut than is usual for a spinet, which we would expect to indicate a darker, more flutey tone.  The wrestplank is no wider than is necessary for the tuning-pins, and to save weight the area beween it and the register is left open.

Decorative brass hinges.

Harpsichord-style separate upper and lower guides.

The spinet measures 162 cm (5' 4") along the spine, adjacent to the wall. As a post-1947 (but pre-1975) instrument with ivory keys it has a CITES  Article 10 certificate, and has also been registered for exemption under the UK Ivory Act 2018, code PH35SPLL.

It is NW London; the price is £1,200 (near offer considered).
