Clavichord by Norman Botham and Peter Barnes

This beautiful clavichord has an interesting history and pedigree.  The late Fr Norman Botham was inspired by Derek Adlam's playing, and decided to make a clavichord for himself.  Sadly, he died when just the case was completed, and following Derek's advice the present owner commissioned Peter Barnes to complete the instrument.

It is double- fretted, based on an eighteenth-century example from John Barnes.  The exterior of the case is painted in the traditional manner.

The compass is 4½ octaves chromatic, C - f3.

Detail of pins and strings

The soundboard is a beautiful example of Sheila Barnes' work.

It is in very fine playing order and recently tuned.  It may be seen and played in Retford, Nottinghamshire.  The price is £3,500.
