Tomkison c. 1822

This piano is in playing order following restoration a few years ago; it is maintained at A415.  It has a 5½-octave keyboard and a double (escapement) action as may be expected for this date with a pianistic action but still retaining the character of an early piano.  Thomas Tomkison made square pianos in this period with either four or six legs, and this one was made with four.  It has retained the original pedal.

Thomas Tomkison may justifiably be called the Royal Maker - it was he who made the special rosewood grand for the Prince Regent (soon to be George IV) for his Brighton Pavilion, to where it has recently been restored, and is now used for concerts.
