This elegant piano has been authentically restored, and is in excellent playing condition. It is number 321, and is very similar to one of the favourite pianos formerly at Finchcocks, number 232 (1807).
The Finchcocks piano had the initials 'GWD' on the soundboard (George Dettmer), and a pattern is emerging that although Robert Stodart was a pioneer of the English grand in the1770s, it seems that the early squares were made by other leading makers including Christopher Ganer.
Stodart names are notoriously difficult to read, but we would expect this one to be 'M & W Stodart' (Matthew and William) Makers to Their Majesties and / The Royal Family / Golden Square / London.
It has the escapement double action for the main part of the compass, but the action for the treble 'additional keys' is single (with no dampers).
Please enjoy this sound-clip of a piece by Josef Haydn.
It may be seen in the London area; the ivory exemption code is K82T8DJJ. The asking price is £1,200 - very modest for an early piano in such excellent playing order. Please contact David Glynn
