Collard & Collard 1858

It's not often that I lead with the closed lid of a piano, but this lid is just about the most magnificent piece of solid Brazilian rosewood that I have ever seen.  This beautiful timber is now endangered, and commercially unavailable.

The serial number 55174 dates this piano to 1858.  With its 6¾-octave compass CC - a4, this is one of the last Collard & Collard squares to be built.  As we see inthe picture above, all the fretwork is present, as is the pedal.  The ivories are in excellent condition.

This one has the benefit of an iron bar to stabilise the tuning.  The separate bridge for the bass covered strings allows a better tension for the lowest steel strings.  The strings are new.
