Please remember that the rôle of Friends of Square
Pianos is just to help with contact.
All information is given in good faith, on the basis of details provided by the seller. I play no part in any transactions (except with myself!) neither do I make any charges to either seller or buyer. However, if seller and/or buyer is happy with the deal, a donation to my branch of Cats Protection would be very much appreciated. Please see 'Donate' button at the bottom of the Home Page. New Parts and Materials for Sale ![]()
As you know, I do not accept paid adverstising, and I do
wish to be fair to all our Friends, some of whom are professional
suppliers of things we need. On the other hand, it is useful for
us all to know where we can get the materials and parts we need.
What I will now start to do, is to compile a list of Suppliers,
by item. This will appear on the Friends and Suppliers Page.
This page will be reserved for one-off opportunities to buy recycled parts from 'Donor' pianos, or other sources - so please keep writing in!

Grand Autumn Sale Many of us have bits and pieces hidden away, whilst others of us need
an elusive component for a restoration project. So today, we
launch a campaign to tidy up our shelves and sheds, and to find good
homes for all those spare parts.
From: Friends of Square Pianos. The pictures below show just a few of my treasures, which would be much happier put to good use. These are available in return for donations (at your discretion - please don't forget postage!) to Cats Protection as above. There is a now a 'donate' button on the front page of this website (down at the bottom) which can accept payments from all cards: this is especially convenient for Friends from overseas. Please email David on friends.sp@btinternet.com with details of what you need - even if it's not shown here. ![]() ![]() **************** From: A Friend in Bedfordshire. A set of four well-nourished legs (sorry, no pedal) from an 1835-ish square.
Nice casters; still carrying traces of mercuric gilding. £100 the four, plus postage, or collect from Bedfordshire. Contact David on friends.sp@btinternet.com ![]() ***************** From Graham Walker ![]() A while ago, we started looking at alternatives to ivory. We all know that new ivory will probably never be available again, and we even have to be careful re-working old stock. Also, it is becoming increasingly difficult to import antique ivory into a number of countries, even with the correct certification. Certainly for new instruments, a good substitute is worth considering. The above picture shows some of the alternatives we have evaluated. The colours are as accurate as I can make them, but we all know how difficult it is to reproduce four colours of white! The Polyester was actually slightly 'pink', and rather 'plasticky'. The Casein was fun, and a natural material, with a long history of use. The sample was quite strongly grained, but had a good appearance and feel. Elforyn is a synthetic material that works well, and has a good feel. The white is too bright for an antique instrument (or a replica) but the cream looks really good, and is a close match for many old pianos. I can recommend it, especially when a keyboard needs a complete re-cover, or for a replica English harpsichord or spinet. It has another advantage, compared to recycled ivory, that it is available in a generous thickness (2.5mm) which enables a good-looking key to be worked. Graham Walker has a set of 45 pieces (5½ octaves) for sale at less than half-price. The size is 155mm x 25mm. They were purchased for an important restoration project, but no longer needed as a complete keyboard has become available. The price is £70, plus postage. Please contact Graham : graham@earlypiano.co.uk **********************
